This blog is retiring due to the main fact that I am no longer in school (as this was a blog for my drawing class). I will still be updating my other blog and will be incorporating my rants and art updates into those blog entries.

Looking Back On This Semester

This past semester I’ve come to remember how much I enjoy the rawness of drawing. I am glad I came to the realization of how I reveal my faith in my art during painting critique, and it shows through into my drawings.

I’ve enjoyed working in graphite again. Getting one’s hands dirty and being invested in each and every drawing has given life to each of these drawings. It’s been hard work, but I’ve enjoyed every moment of it.

I know I’m going to miss working in a classroom setting, but I’m looking forwards to what God has planned in life. I hope to continue to draw while I’m out in the mission field and throughout life.

In the past 14 weeks, I worked 133.5 hours. This week, through finishing each drawing and photographing the work, I added another 9 hours of work, bringing the total number of hours worked on drawing this semester to 142.5.

Time Log 14a

Because i’m used to posting on Sunday nights, i’m not to sure if this time log is due now, or at on Thursday…

So, this week was relatively productive compared to last week. I spent quite a while (3 hrs) thinking through some different ideas for drawings. I came up with a number of good ideas, but some of them just looked really strange, so i came up with more.

On friday and saturday, i spent about 9 hours sitting on my floor drawing, redrawing and staring at the drawings. I got two that i really like that look good. Just need to put the finishing touches on them now.

From here, i plan on doing another 1-2 drawings before Thursdays critique (i believe and hope it’s thursday…) while putting the finishing touches on what i have now.

So far this week, i’ve worked about 12 hours on drawing.

So, this past week, i was more concerned with my Sr. Show and putting all that together, rather than working on drawing (a little more important).

I did get some work done though. I spent another hour and a half finalizing my artist statement (which i think looks really well). Add another hour for hanging the drawings (probably took longer, but i didnt keep track). So, on the Sr. Show, i worked 2.5 hours (drawing related).

Other than that, i probably only worked another hour on ideas/sketches.

So, this week was a bust, but i am no longer worrying about painting or Sr. Show, so i can devote mor time to drawing.

this week, i did a total of 3.5 hours of Drawing work outside of class.

Rant from Sr. Reviews

So, I survived Sr. Reviews. Basically, I had to present my art to the faculty here at Anderson University, defend it, talk about it, all that good stuff, for fifteen minutes, then answer any questions that they had.

There is a reason I am an artist. I do not like talking in front of large groups of people (3+ = large group). Maybe that is why I stumbled through words, paused, and said “Umm..” a lot. I am not a public speaker.

I like art because I get to put it up, then hide. Let the art talk for itself.

Well, i know that some of the things i said, talking about faith in my art, did not sit well with some people (facial expressions and body language). I understand that people will not understand my faith, I dont expect them to.

While the review went well, i’m a little frustrated with the actions of certain people afterwards. After i finished my presentation and answered a couple questions, i stayed in the gallery space for a couple minutes to talk to some people, but when i left, just outside the door, a group of students were talking to a professor.

As i walked out the door and passed them, they all went quiet.

If you’re going to talk about me, be honest and dont try to hide it. If you cannot say it to my face, or in my presence, they you shouldnt be saying it at all. This goes for everyone and everything.

While i understand this is human nature to talk, when it is someone you look up to (aka: a professor) it is very disturbing and unsettling to know that they dont know how to act respectfully towards their students.

I know that this is a rant, but it is really rustrating when people talk about me and they think that i dont ralize. If you cant say it to the persons face, you shouldnt be talking about them.

Just a couple toughts…

So, this past week was a little stressful. (aka: extremely stressful)

Between stressing out over Sr. Show, having a slight panic attack, and having the stress manifest itself physically in an extreme pain in my lower back, i got a little bit of work done.

While i havn’t been able to create any new pieces in drawing, i did finish all the pieces that i have started. I applied the dry-brush paint to the last couple pieces and put the finishing touches on all of them, preparing them for my Sr. Show. I spent about 2 hours doin’ all this stuff.

I want to talk w/ Dr - about my show during class, since i want to check and make sure the pieces that i have chosen fit well together on the wall…

I also spent a good deal of time attempting to write out my Artist Statement. So far i have around 5-10 attempts, and a whole bunch of nothing. I will probably sit in front of all my work once they get hung up tomarrow after dinner. I spent about 7 hours on working on this piece of writing.

I hate it that i get caught up in words, stumbling over them again and again. I guess it happens to everyone every once in a while.

So, this week, i spent about 9 hours on drawing stuff this past week. Now, onto Sr. Show. And trying not to panic again.

Time Log 11

This week felt like a panic… and i allready know that this next week will be worse with Sr. Show comming up.

I got a little frustrated with the drawing, so i had a staredown with the artwork. I put them all out on the floor of the student center and had a conversation with them (aka: myself). This took up a good part of three hours (between the arguing, the sketching, the writing, it took that long).

After that, I started redrawing the image of the little guy screaming in my head, and did some experimenting with brown conte and didnt really like it that much, so i didnt add it into the drawing. Between the experimenting and the drawing, i spent another six hours.

After which, i sat tehre some more and attempted to write out an Artist Statement, but after two hours, i gave up and left. (yes, this happened all day Friday and part of Saturday)

So, in total this week, i spent 11 hours working on drawing…. panic mode is setting in.

Time Log 10

With only 2 weeks before hanging my senior show, i am beginning to stress out. That’s why i ran away to the mountains yesterday morning (i may put up a couple photos later).

So, on to drawing stuff. I did a little bit of that. I’ve been trying to figure out my next image, doing a little bit of research, sketching, and starting a piece, only to realize that i dont like it. This spent up about 7 hours worth of work.

I also re-drew a piece (the one with the guy screaming in my head that nobody could really see… yah, that one), which took up about 3 hours or so, i kept on drawing the little guy to small… so, an eraser became my friend.

I also put on the dry-brush technique to the two other drawings that i have done, which only took about 30 min or so.

In total this week, i spent 10.5 hours working on drawing. It should go higher as Senior Show comes up…

These past two weeks have been a little bit relaxing and chaotic at the same time. For spring break, i went home and was able to work a lot at night after everyone else (ie: parents) went to sleep.

I did a lot of writing and sketching, about 10 hours of it.

On top of that, i finished two more drawings. All i need to do to finish them is apply the dry acrylic and cut them down to size. I spent about 7 hours on the drawings throughout the week.

So, in all, i did a lot of work during spring break, evern though it was relaxing. I spent about 17 hours on drawing in the past two weeks.

Update from Spring Break

I was drawing last night, and i realized something really interesting. I had this whole idea formed in my head for the next drawing, and when i started it, it just didnt seem to fit together, but another idea came and i continued through the process. After i finished, i was looking back and i realized that this new idea that came while trying to work out an older idea was a whole lot better than the original.

Funny how things just seem to happen. The motto or lesson of this story: dont get to consumed by previous ideas, but let them flow from one to another.
